The Pantanal basin is a Quaternary active sedimentary basin which subsidence is controlled by faults. It is the largest tropical wetland in the world, which is located in the center of South America and has an area of about 170,000 km² (with 138,183 km² in Brazil). Vegetation lineaments in wetlands are very important because they help to identify tectonic features that are important to understand their formation and environmental variability. These features in Pantanal are expressed by differences in vegetation type and phenology. Although the relief express the location of faults, in this flat surface it changes abruptly the vegetation phenology. This paper discusses from remote data the relation between local rainfall and vegetation phenology variability, using TRMM and MODIS data, in a vegetation lineament with about 100 km long and the azimuth of 69ºNE. The results show strong correlation between rain and phenology in the SE portion of the lineament, while the NW portion shows a weak dependence due to a slightly difference in elevation that changes the flood seasonality. These conclusions, associated with the linearity of the contact between these environments, indicate that the presence of a fault with vertical displacement is responsible for this phenological variability.
